Guano Apes

One of the best things for german music history happened in the 90's! Henning Rümenapp, Dennis Poschwatta and Stefan Ude formed their band Guano Apes! In 1994 singer Sandra Nasi joined the band.

Guano Apes' have a unique music style which belongs to the "Crossover" genre. A lot people expect an interesting story behind their band name, but there isn't one.The band's name Guano Apes was created by combining two words they thought sounded cool.

In 1996 Guano Apes won the 'Local Heros' band contest. With the money they won, they produced their first album 'Proud like a God'. Following the release of the album in 1997, critical response was fairly muted, but soon Guano Apes gained a huge fanbase.

Their single Open your eyes hit the german top 10 charts and nothing could stop the Guano Apes.

In the same year they released their second single "Lords of the Boards". Lords of the boards is the ultimate anthem for snowboarders!

Everytime I listen to this song, I want grab a snowboard (although I can't snowboard) and do something crazy.

Guano Apes music is so powerful that it is impossible to stand still!

After extensive touring, they released in 2000 their second album "Don't give me names". The album was critically successful, earning them two awards and international success.

Only one year later an other important point in their career happened. The famous german comedian Michael Mittermeier asked the Guano Apes to record with him the song Kumba yo, originally Kumbaya. Because of their record contract the band couldn't do the song as Guano Apes. Finally they picked the name Guano Babes vs. Michael Mittermeier and recorded Kumb yo which became one more successful song.

Michael Mittermeier was at this time one of the most popular comedians in Germany. Althoug they were already becoming popular, their collaboration with Mittermeier helped Guano Apes to cement their success.

Their third album released in 2003. The title "Walk on a thin line" seeming to reflect Guano Apes career at this time. Although the album included the hit single "You can't stop me", it seemed that Guano Apes were lacking the creativity and passion of their early years.

Unexpectedly they announced in 2003 that the band were taking a break and several of the members want start solo/side projects.

In 2005 the band officially broke up, with all the members pursuiting other careers in music.

Sandra Nasi's work in particular gained mainstream attention. She released a Soloalbum and was the first singer who recorded a song with the Finnish instrumental rock band, Apocalyptica.

In 2009 the band re-united and played at Rock im Park and Rock am Ring festival. Four years after their seperation they still rock festivals like they never would have been gone!

The first time I heard Sandra Nasic's voice I was incredibly impressed- you have to listen to their songs and watch the videos to understand why Sandra Nasic is so special!

Great write up, I really like their music, they're kind of reminiscent of another band, but I cant put my finger on which one.
